AIRI workshop explored how AI and sensors can improve infrastructure
How can AI and connected sensors help detect faults earlier and improve infrastructure maintenance? At a recent workshop within AIRI, stakeholders discussed their needs and how the research can contribute to better monitoring of energy infrastructure, railways and roads.
Aging infrastructure is exposed to increasing climate pressures, while inspections and maintenance need to be carried out over large geographical areas with limited resources. AIRI is investigating how energy-efficient sensors and AI that analyze data directly at the sensor can help detect changes and identify potential problems earlier.
The purpose of the workshop was to gather relevant actors, identify common needs and get input for the project's continued research and development. A central question for the discussions was: Which state do you need to understand better in order to make the right decisions?
In conversations prior to the workshop, several needs had been identified, including better knowledge of the actual state of the infrastructure, earlier detection of faults, more continuous monitoring and better opportunities to transform data into useful decision support.
During the workshop, the participants discussed these needs and possible solutions. They also received an introduction to AIRI and how the project's innovation network will contribute to collaboration between researchers and organizations working with infrastructure.
More information
The workshop is part of AIRI's long-term work to let the needs of the businesses guide the development of new applications. Through the innovation network, participating actors will be able to provide feedback on technical solutions, demonstrators and experiences during the project.
The goal is to develop solutions that meet concrete challenges in infrastructure monitoring and maintenance and that help businesses make better-informed decisions about when and where action is needed.
AIRI is funded by support from Interreg Sweden-Norway and Region Västernorrland.
