Democracy Resilience and Influence Power Analysis (DRIP) & Influencer Democracy Index (IDI)
Political messages are increasingly disseminated through digital platforms. Social media, influencers and AI shape how political issues are discussed and amplified in public debate. DRIP and the Influencer Democracy Index (IDI) study how these developments affect democratic resilience.
Digital platforms have become central arenas for political communication. Social media, influencers, content creators and other digital opinion actors play an increasingly important role in how political messages circulate and gain visibility in public debate. At the same time, algorithmic systems and emerging AI-based tools shape how information is distributed and which perspectives receive attention.
DRIP (Democratic Resilience and Influence Power Analysis) is a research initiative at Mid Sweden University that examines how political opinion formation and democratic influence are evolving in a platformized information environment. The project is conducted in collaboration with the Influencer Democracy Index (IDI).
The project focuses on how digital platforms and new types of opinion actors influence the circulation of political messages and the dynamics of public debate. Particular attention is given to influencers, content creators and other hybrid actors who increasingly participate in political communication and digital opinion formation.
The research is conceptually grounded in the idea of democratic resilience, understood as the capacity of democratic systems to adapt to technological and communicative change while maintaining open, informed and pluralistic public debate.
Project development phase
The project begins with a development phase conducted jointly by DRIP and the Influencer Democracy Index (IDI). The aim is to develop a shared research and collaboration framework linking academic research on democratic resilience with new analytical approaches to measuring digital influence and opinion power.
This phase therefore serves as a foundation for future research on democracy, digital platforms, influencers and AI in political communication.
