Evaluating Community Perspectives and Institutional Capacities for Sámi (Meta)Data Governance
This project examines Sámi perspectives and institutional readiness to use TK and BC Labels - tools that embed cultural protocols and rights - ensuring ethical, sovereignty-aligned governance.
This project aims to assess Sámi community perspectives on the cultural relevance and applicability of the Local Contexts Traditional Knowledge (TK) and Biocultural (BC) Labels, grounded in the CARE Principles, while also examining the institutional capacities and readiness needed for their effective implementation.
Through a participatory approach, the project will identify key opportunities, challenges, and strategies for advancing culturally aligned governance of Sámi collections.
The resulting recommendations will illuminate areas of convergence and divergence between Sámi community expectations and institutional capacities, supporting collaborative pathways for integrating TK and BC Labels into archival practice. In doing so, the project aims to support efforts toward strengthening Sámi sovereignty and fostering ethical, culturally grounded approaches to the stewardship of Sámi heritage.
