IRIS ‑ Integrating Response Intensity in Surveys
IRIS examines how linguistic nuances in intensity and translation choices influence responses in international surveys. The project develops new methodological tools to improve comparability and data quality in cross-national research.
International surveys are widely used to compare attitudes, values and living conditions across countries. However, subtle differences in wording and translation may influence how questions are interpreted and answered. IRIS investigates how semantic meaning and emotional intensity vary between languages and how this shapes survey responses.
The project combines computational language analysis with survey experiments in several countries. A particular focus is placed on bilingual countries in order to distinguish language effects from cultural differences. The overall aim is to strengthen methodological standards and data quality in cross-national survey research.
The project is in collaboration with GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, the University of Gothenburg and Uppsala University.
