Mock Elections and the Democratic Mission of Schools
This project examines how mock elections are organized and integrated into upper secondary education and their significance for students’ democratic learning and civic engagement.
Since the 1960s, mock elections have been held in Swedish schools during national and European election years, aiming to foster students’ political interest and prepare them for future democratic participation. Despite their long-standing role, research on how mock elections are implemented and their impact on students is limited. This project investigates the 2026 mock election, focusing on how upper secondary schools organize and integrate it into teaching, the pedagogical considerations involved, and its significance for students’ political knowledge, attitudes, and engagement. Combining surveys and interviews, the project will generate subject-specific didactic insights relevant to civics education and teacher training.
