New GPU infrastructure strengthens ResilientEdge research at the University of Oulu
The University of Oulu has expanded its computing infrastructure for the ResilientEdge project with a new high-performance workstation equipped with two NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs donated through the NVIDIA Academic Grant Program.
The GPUs have been installed in a Lenovo ThinkStation P8, linked to a second computer equipped with two NVIDIA RTX 5090 GPUs. Together, the systems form a compact experimental computing cluster for research on resilient edge computing and distributed AI.
The infrastructure supports ResilientEdge, a cross-border research project led by Mid Sweden University in collaboration with the University of Oulu. The project develops secure and adaptable edge-computing solutions for applications such as industrial IoT, manufacturing, logistics and smart buildings.
Edge computing brings data processing closer to where data is generated, reducing latency and dependence on remote cloud services. ResilientEdge investigates how distributed systems can continue operating when network connections or computing resources fail, a particular challenge in remote areas such as the northern Aurora region.
“The important aspect for ResilientEdge is that this gives us a real distributed computing environment where we can experiment with resilience,” says Miguel Bordallo López, Professor at the University of Oulu. “We can study how AI workloads can be distributed between different machines, how computation can be moved when resources become unavailable, and how services can continue operating under changing conditions.”
The infrastructure enables researchers to test distributed computing, resource allocation and resilient AI services before moving towards larger demonstrations and industrial applications.
“Resilience is not only about having powerful hardware. It is about designing systems that can continue to provide useful services when conditions change,” Bordallo López says. “With several GPU-equipped machines available as edge nodes, we can reproduce these situations experimentally and develop methods for making distributed AI systems more robust.”
The two NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs were awarded to the University of Oulu through the NVIDIA Academic Grant Program to support research on GPU-accelerated simulation, AI and digital twins. Their integration expands the ResilientEdge test environment for distributed and resilient computing.
Supported by Interreg Aurora, ResilientEdge runs from 2025 to 2028 and aims to strengthen digital resilience through secure, efficient edge-computing solutions for real-world applications.
