TRANSCARENET ‑ Who takes care of the elderly when we leave
TRANSCARENET explores how families care for older relatives across borders in the Nordic and Baltic regions. The project examines how care responsibilities are shared, how caregivers are affected, and what support families living in different countries need.
Who takes care of older relatives when family members move abroad? TRANSCARENET explores how families organise and negotiate care across national borders, focusing on the Nordic and Baltic regions.
The project examines the experiences of migrants from Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as Ukraine, who live in Iceland, Lithuania and Sweden and care for ageing parents in their countries of origin. It investigates how families share care responsibilities and manage the emotional, practical and financial challenges of providing support from a distance.
A central focus is how these responsibilities affect caregivers’ mental health and well-being. The project also examines the policies and support available to families, identifying gaps and opportunities to better meet their needs.
By deepening our understanding of care across borders, TRANSCARENET aims to inform policies and support initiatives that help migrant families care for older relatives.
