Chelating surfactants – the solution of the future for metal recycling

Chelating surfactants can effectively capture metal ions in aqueous environments and be separated through foam flotation, where they are transported to the foam and recovered via electrolysis. This method reduces metal emissions, enables the recovery of valuable metals, and contributes to the purification of water and soil from heavy metals. Beyond environmental and recycling applications, chelating surfactants have significant potential in cosmetics and industrial filtration systems, where their ability to bind metals in hydrophobic environments can be utilized. In fundamental research, we investigate their unique chemical properties, such as pH responsiveness and interaction with metal ions. To understand their behavior at interfaces and in solutions, we employ advanced analytical techniques, including surface tension measurements, neutron reflection, and NMR. Through our research, we strive to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for metal separation and material processing, with broad applications across industry and environmental technology.
