Changes in Legimus – course literature may be missing for the autumn term

Do you use Legimus for your course literature? From the autumn term, some course books may be more difficult to access. Find out what the changes mean for you and what you can do if a book you need is unavailable.

Talböcker

Ahead of the autumn term, it may become more difficult for students who use Legimus to access all required course literature. The Swedish Agency for Accessible Media (MTM), which is responsible for Legimus, has changed their policy on which books are produced as talking books. In addition, some titles that were previously available in Legimus have been removed.

This change is not a decision made by the library. MTM refers to the new accessibility legislation, which is intended to make more e-books accessible on the commercial market. As a result, MTM no longer produces a talking book if a commercially available e-book already exists that the library can purchase.

The problem is that the library is not always able to purchase these e-books. Prices and licensing terms mean that some course books cannot be provided through the library. This may result in situations where a book is neither available as an accessible e-book through the library nor as a talking book  in Legimus.

What does this mean for you as a student?

  • The library can no longer order talking books of all required course books when a commercially available e-book exists.

  • Some titles that were previously available in Legimus have been removed. The library does not yet have a complete list of which books are affected, which means that the literature lists for several courses may be impacted

  • Additional titles may be removed from Legimus during the autumn. MTM has stated that information will be published before books are removed, but it is not yet clear exactly which titles will be affected.

  • You may need to use e-books from several different platforms instead of having your course literature collected in one place in Legimus

What can you do?

There are a few things you can try if you cannot find your course book in Legimus:

  • Talk to your teacher and ask whether an older edition can be used. This may be an option because older editions are, in some cases, still available in Legimus

  • You may need to purchase or rent some books yourself.

  • If the e-book available on the market is not sufficiently accessible for your needs, you can contact the library. The library can still order a talking book when the commercially available e-book does not work well enough for your individual needs.
