Financial support for Open Access publishing
Publish Open Access with funding through national library agreements with various publishers. Costs covered by the agreements are prepaid.
Publish Open Access through national library agreements
Researchers affiliated with Mid Sweden University have the opportunity to publish open access free of charge in journals from various publishers. This is made possible through national library agreements meaning that the library will cover the APC costs (APC = article processing charge). This means that you can publish open access for free. Since publishers often identifies eligible articles from your email domain name, make sure to always use your Mid Sweden University e-mail address (firstname.lastname@miun.se) at all stages of the publishing.
The University Library is now launching a new search tool to find these journals. The search tool will make it easier to find journals with cost-free OA publishing. All journals covered by our agreements are included in the tool, which contains around 13 000 journals.

The joint funding by research funders
The policy decision made by the research funders Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet), Forte, Formas, and Vinnova to jointly finance publishing with publishers that exclusively publish open access journals is extended for 2026. This decision means that researchers at all organizations participating in the Bibsam Consortium can publish with the following eight publishers without any fees for either the author or the institution: Copernicus, eLife, Frontiers, JMIR, MDPI, MJS Publishing, Pensoft Publishers, and PLOS.
There is currently a debate in Sweden about MDPI and questionable quality reviews.
The University Library recommends that anyone considering publishing at MDPI critically review the current journal.
