IEEE Fellow is a rare honor for researchers world wide - and now Professor Mikael Gidlund has taken his place in the exclusive circle. His research strengthens Swedish industry and regional innovation and the award shows that top-level international research also thrives outside the big cities.

Mikael Gidlund's work is about developing wireless communication that is extremely reliable – a crucial component for the smart factories of the future. Here, technologies such as 6G, AI and advanced statistics meet to optimize networks and ensure robustness in critical situations.

"The award signals that the research conducted here is of the absolute highest international standard. It increases our visibility and can make more international top researchers, doctoral students and industry partners open their eyes to us. We may not have the same resources as the largest universities, but we have committed teams and long-term collaborations. It is at least as important," says Mikael Gidlund, professor of computer engineering at the STC (Sensible Things that Communicate) research centre.

Strengthens both the region and Sweden

The fact that a professor at Mid Sweden University has now been appointed IEEE Fellow for the first time is a milestone. It strengthens the STC research environment, opens doors to international collaborations and makes it easier to attract research funding.

"This shows that Mid Sweden University conducts world-class research. An IEEE Fellow places us clearly on the international map and increases our attractiveness as a research partner for researchers, doctoral students and industry. The strengthened attractiveness in turn creates better opportunities for the region's companies to benefit from advanced technology research and international collaborations," says Mattias O'Nils, Centre Director for STC.

Research with global impact

IEEE is the world's largest technical organization with over 400,000 members. Each year, a few researchers are appointed to become Fellows, which is the highest membership rank, and it is given to researchers whose work has had global significance. For Mikael Gidlund, the motivation for the appointment reads:
"for contributions to reliable wireless connectivity for the Industrial Internet of Things."

But success is not just personal.
"This is proof that our research has an international impact. But it is just as much a recognition for my doctoral students and postdocs – without them this would not have been possible," he says.
