Reopening of the Forest Exhibition at Norra Berget – A day filled with learning and inspiration
On May 15, it was finally time for the long-awaited reopening of the forest exhibition at Norra Berget. To celebrate Mid Sweden University's 20th anniversary, we invited primary schools to an educational and exciting day about the forest and its history.
The exhibition is a collaboration between the open-air museum Norra Berget, and shows an exciting mix of the forest's history and Sundsvall's own development. There are also learning activities for children in primary and middle school.
Jennie Sandström, researcher in biology at Mid Sweden University, was on hand to talk about the growth rings of trees and how to see what the trees have been through over the years. She also talked about one of Norra Berget's oldest pine trees, which is over 400 years old and which was searched for in connection with the city's 400th anniversary last year.
"It's fantastic to meet children and young people in the forest and arouse their curiosity. Inspiring science in such a wonderful environment makes the knowledge alive and memorable," says Jennie Sandström.
Three schools participated in the inauguration: Gångviken School Year 2, Mimerskolan Year 4 and Hagaskolan's adapted primary school.
The students, equipped with small magnifiers, were able to take a closer look at insects and discover the richness of the forest in a new way. The interest was great and the curiosity was contagious.
Visiting school classes not only had the opportunity to explore the exciting forest at Norra Berget, but they also got coffee and a bag of "seeds of the future" for planting meadow flowers. Flowers that are liked by bumblebees and bees and that create biodiversity.
Forest exhibition open until November
You can also visit the exhibition on your own. It stays up until the first week of November.
You can find it from the parking lot by the observation tower – follow the arrows.
