The international graduate school doubles in expanded investment
Mid Sweden University's international graduate school is now being expanded with new collaborations with eight universities from four continents.
Eight doctoral students will be recruited for research projects on industrial transformation and the initiative is funded by the Knowledge Foundation, which has granted an additional SEK 15 million.
"This is a unique opportunity to strengthen our quality and the TransTech research environment in business collaboration and at the same time strengthen our international network," says Mattias O'Nils, project manager for IRS TransTech+.
When the international graduate school was started in 2023, it was the first international graduate school led by Mid Sweden University. Through IRS TransTech+, the investment is doubled to include a total of sixteen universities and the same number of doctoral students. The efforts take place within the framework of the Knowledge Foundation's targeted investment in Strategic Environments, where the research environment Transformative Technology at Mid Sweden University is the only one of its kind.
Within IRS TransTech+, which extends until 2030, Mid Sweden University collaborates with five European universities; These are the Spanish universities of Madrid and Barcelona, the University of Tampere and the University of Eastern Finland, and the University of Newcastle. In addition, Clemson University, USA, Tunis El Manar University in Tunisia and Pakistan's National University of Science and Technology are also included.
Ten international and national industrial companies in various industries linked to sustainable development, technology and innovation are also participating in the initiative.
"IRS TransTech+ will give Mid Sweden University an even stronger international research and contribute to our goal of being at the forefront of research in sustainable industrial transformation. It is also an important step in strengthening the supply of skills to Swedish industry through international collaboration," says Mattias O'Nils.
"We see the initiative as an excellent example of how our funding of long-term strategic development work at the university contributes to the building of strong research and educational environments with both international attractiveness and clear relevance for Swedish business. This is completely in line with the goals and mission of the Knowledge Foundation," says Yvonne Fors, Programme Director at the Knowledge Foundation.
"IRS TransTech+ has the potential to create long-term effects, not only for Mid Sweden University, but also for our partners in the business community and international academia. It shows how we can strengthen our role as an innovation-driven university through strategic investments," says Hans-Erik Nilsson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Innovation and Business Collaboration at Mid Sweden University.
Mid Sweden University's research centre FSCN (Fibre Science and Communications Network), STC (Sensible Things that Communicate) and STRC (Sports Tech Research Centre) are part of Transformative Technologies.
