Shifte Mosalli is a new doctor of sociology
On 24 April, Shifte Mosalli defended his doctoral thesis on class mobility and inequality and can now call himself a doctor of sociology.
Last Friday, Shifte Mosalli defended his thesis in sociology with the thesis "The power dimensions of mobility – Class and race in the geography of inequality".
The dissertation examines class mobility, so-called class trips, among racialized people who grew up in Swedish suburbs. Through the participants' own stories, it is analyzed how experiences of moving between different social positions are connected to broader societal processes.
The results show that class mobility is not a simple or neutral movement, but a complex process characterized by power. It can mean opportunities for inclusion and recognition, but also demands for distance to the communities you come from.
"I show how class mobility is not a linear or neutral movement between two positions, but an ongoing and power-driven process," says Shifte Mosalli.
