Aim

The student should develop and increase the ability to use oral and written English as well as develop knowledge of English linguistics English-speaking countries’ transatlantic and global culture and literary history and use this knowledge to interpret and make comparisons.

Course objectives

After completing the course the student should be able to:
- show a more developed ability to understand, produce and critically evaluate spoken and written English of different levels and styles
- with the support of relevant terminology understand, apply and show a developed command of general linguistic theories and the historical development of the English language
- show a developed ability to read, understand and analyse cultural and literary texts in relation to the transatlantic world’s literary and cultural historical eras
- show a developed ability to read, understand and analyse individual literary texts in their global contexts
- show an increased ability to contribute constructively to his/her studies, both individually and in group, as well as plan her/his studies over the short and long term
- demonstrate the ability to search for, evaluate and select information from the Internet, library resources and other sources.
- demonstrate the ability to search for, evaluate and select information, as well as independently use language tools, dictionaries, grammars and corpora.
- write a supervised linguistic research paper that investigates a relevant area of linguistics, and to oppose another student’s research project
- show the ability to collaborate with other students to develop, improve and critically evaluate his/her and other students’ oral and written proficiency in English.

The course consists of four modules:
- English Literatures in the Transatlantic World, 7,5 credits
- Language Survey, 7,5 credits
- English Literatures in a Global Perspective, 7,5 credits
- English B Research Paper, 7,5 credits

Entry requirements

Admission to the course normally requires 22,5 credits from English GR (A), 30 credits

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

M410: English B Research Paper, 7.5 Credits

1. English Literatures in the Transatlantic World, 7,5 credits
The module will be examined by means of participation in self evaluation and peer reviewing, written submissions, presentation of acquired knowledge related to the course literature and participation in group discussions.

2. Language Survey, 7,5 credits
The module will be examined by means of oral and written submissions, participation in group discussions and a written exam.

3. English Literatures in a Global Perspective, 7,5 credits
The module will be examined by means of participation in self evaluation and peer reviewing, written submissions, presentation of acquired knowledge related to the course literature and participation in group discussions.

4. English B Research Paper, 7,5 credits
The module will be examined by means of writing of a research paper, participation in peer reviewing and participation in an opposition seminar.

Students are entitled to scheduled examination opportunities during the course period as well as two extra opportunities within one year. Extra examination opportunities are based on the same course literature. Students who have failed an examination or the course twice have the right to another examiner. A student who has passed an examination or course is not allowed re-examination in order to gain a higher grade.

Transitional rules

För lärarstuderande antagna till ULÄRY (före 1 juli 2007) finns möjlighet till konvertering av den sjugradiga betygsskalan till tregradig betygsskala.

Grading system

Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

Other information

For trainee teachers registered on ULÄRY (before 1 July 2007) it is possible to convert the seven grade scale to the three grade scale.
