Aim

The aim of this course is to introduce the various study areas encompassed within the discipline of human geography. The course leads to knowledge on globalization, its causes but also its impacts on communities around the world. The course also aims to provide insight into how humans interact with their environments they live in, explores issues such as population dynamics, and investigates processes such as urbanization and counter-urbanization.

Course objectives

In order to obtain a passing grade, the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

• Define and explain basic concepts and theories relating to the subject
• Explain globalization causes and highlight its positive and negative effects over the short and long term
• Describe and reflect on the relationships between population development, economic and social development and resource use at the global, regional and local levels

Content

This course provides an introduction to the areas of study in human geography and intends to give insight into how people and places affect and are affected by globalization. The course discusses the interdependence of economic, social, political and spatial processes within and between countries. Based on local, regional and global perspectives the interdependence between places and regions in a globalized world is discussed.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Instruction consists of lectures, seminars and exercises. Group work, presentations and discussions on various themes are recurring elements. Excursions can occur. Teaching is in English.

Examination form

0009: Individual exam, 3 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

0011: PM, 3 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

0014: Oral work, 1.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

The course is examined through a written individual examination, seminar discussions and oral and written presentations. At home examinations or other written assignments, a complementary oral presentation may be requested by the teacher. The student should hence demonstrate the necessary knowledge to ensure that the student is the actual sender and the author of the written work.

If the student has a decision from the coordinator at the Mid Sweden University on pedagogical support in case of disability, the examiner has the right to provide a suitable examination for the student.

Examination restrictions

Students admitted to the previous version of this course have the right to graduate 3 times within 1 year according to that syllabus. Thereafter the students are transferred to this syllabus.
