Aim

The student shall, during the course, acquire basic knowledge of derivatives and integrals with applications as well as of elementary mathematical statistics.

Course objectives

After completed course the student shall be able to
- differentiate simple functions
- solve applied problems using differentiation
- integrate simple functions
- solve applied problems using integrals
- master elementary descriptive statistics
- carry out calculations concerning random variables and probability density functions
- apply inference theory in simple cases
- use linear regression to solve simple problems.

Content

Logarithm and exponential functions. Trigonometric functions and their graphs. Differentiation of simple functions, products and quotients of functions as well as compositions of functions. Applications of derivatives. Introduction to differential equations. Integration of simple functions. Applications of integrals. Descriptive statistics. Probability theory. Random variables and probability density functions. Inference (point estimation, interval estimation and hypothesis testing). Linear regression.

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

The teaching consists of lectures.

Examination form

T100: Written Exam, Calculus, 3.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

T200: Written Exam, Mathematical Statistics, 4 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

The final grade is based on a weighted assessment of how well the course elements have been completed.

Examination restrictions
