Aim
The purpose of the independent work is to give experience in independently and critically analyzing different problems in economics using available scientific methods and the knowledge acquired in other courses, and in clearly structuring and formulating a presentation of the analytical results.
Course objectives
By the end of this course students should:
Have the ability to identify and formulate problems in economics in a critical and independent way.
Have the ability to clearly present and discuss the conclusions, knowledge and arguments of the results at a seminar with course participants.
Have the skills that are required to giving constructive criticism on a paper written by other students at a seminar with course participants.
Content
The object of independent work is to give practice in independent and critical analysis of economic problems using available scientific methods and the knowledge acquired in other courses. The paper must be defended in a seminar. Besides defending ones own paper there is also responsibility to serve as discussant for someone else’s paper at the same level.
Entry requirements
Economics Ba (A) and (B), 60 Credits and Ba (C) at least 7,5 Credits.
Selection rules and procedures
The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.
Teaching form
No traditional lectures. Only teaching in form of individual supervision.
Examination form
1000: Exam, 15 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
The course is examined by writing a thesis to be discussed at a seminar with pre-assigned discussants. The course requires active participation in the presentation of a thesis, discussion etc.
To obtain the final grade, a re-written version must be submitted to the supervisor where the views presented at the final seminar have been taken into account.
Another requirement for obtaining a final grade is that each student must send his/her thesis by e-mail to the scrutinizing firm Urkund in order to remove all suspicions of plagiarism.
Grading system
Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
