Aim

The aim of this course is to introduce students to social network analysis (SNA) as a theory and as method.

Course objectives

After completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Describe the major theoretical ideas underpinning network research
- Explain network related concepts and measurements
- Analyze and interpret social network data at a basic level

Content

This is an introductory course to social network analysis (SNA) with a twofold emphasis on the theoretical underpinnings of SNA as well as its application as a methodological tool. The theoretical components are introduced through lectures and discussions on political issues, as well as popular themes such as “small world” or “six degrees of separation” from a network perspective. This means that we focus on how people, organizations, or countries relate to each other rather than their individual attributes. SNA as a method is a component of qualitative as well as quantitative analyses, both introduced in this class.
