Welcome Ruben, new PhD student at NDH!
Welcome to NDH and Mid Sweden University, Ruben Basten. Tell us, where are you from?
"I'm originally from Nijmegen in the Netherlands, but I've lived in Sweden for most of my life, including in Stöde just outside Sundsvall.
And career-wise?
– I have a bachelor's degree in organic and polymer chemistry from HAN University of Applied Sciences in Nijmegen. After graduating, I started on the Master by Research program in chemistry at Mid Sweden University here in Sundsvall. During my master's degree, my research focused on the characterization and synthesis of volatile molecules.
What will you be working with here with us?
– I will work as a PhD student in the Circular Biomass 3.0 project, which aims to prepare local industrial production through sustainable processes and products that lead to a reduced climate impact. My main focus will be to develop methods for extracting critical and valuable metals from different waste streams using organisms, a process called biomining. In addition, I will work with different types of analyses and synthesis work.
Exciting! What do you think of your new workplace so far?
"My impression of Mid Sweden University is very positive. Even before I started as a doctoral student, I had experience from here, first as an intern during my bachelor's degree and then as a master's student for two years. During that time, I was impressed by the research that is being conducted and the wide range of analytical instruments. The best impression came from the nice and supportive staff I have had the privilege of working with.
When you're not working, what do you do?
"In my spare time, I like to spend time with friends and family. I also spend time on physical activity and enjoy reading, which provides both relaxation and opportunities for personal development.
