International conference on school social work to be hosted at Mid Sweden University
In October, researchers, practitioners and policymakers from several countries will gather at Mid Sweden University to discuss how schools can strengthen pupils’ well-being, inclusion and opportunities to succeed in education.
On 14-15 October, Mid Sweden University will host the third international conference, Social Work in Schools – Collaboration, Inclusion and Student Well-Being. Participants from Sweden, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States and South Africa, among others, will come together to share research findings, experiences and examples of practical work in school settings.
The conference focuses on issues that are highly relevant across many countries, including school absenteeism, mental health, social inclusion, and collaboration between schools, families and communities. Over the two days, 38 research presentations and workshops will highlight both challenges and success factors in creating safe and inclusive learning environments for children and young people.
Among the keynote speakers is Professor Carlene Firmin from Durham University in the United Kingdom, an internationally recognised researcher specialising in children’s social environments and safety. Mid Sweden University will also be represented by Senior Lecturer Sandra Lund, who will address issues relating to support, equality and professional practice in rural areas. In addition, Caroline Berg, Chair of the Swedish Association of School Counsellors, will take part in the conference.
The conference will be held on the Östersund campus and will provide opportunities for knowledge exchange between researchers, practitioners and community stakeholders. By bringing together perspectives from different countries, the conference aims to contribute to a greater understanding of how schools can respond to the needs of children and young people in a time of social and societal change.
