Welcome to attend André Ahrling's defence of his doctoral dissertation "Love is the virtue through which the poor is rich: Representations of virtue and poverty in Old Swedish sermon collections" on the subject of history.
The dissertation is about how poverty and virtue are portrayed in Old Swedish medieval sermons and what these representations can tell us about medieval notions of how people and society should be.
"In the Middle Ages, poverty meant much more than just economic destitution. The poor could be someone who lacked power or property, someone who was exposed to injustice, or someone who voluntarily renounced worldly riches in order to get closer to God. Poverty could also be an ideal and an attitude: to be humble and content with what you had, rather than striving for money and power," says Andre Ahrling.
He chose the subject because he is interested in how people have tried to explain and understand why society looks the way it does and how it should be.
