We are offering a series of seminars focusing on the transformation of hospital-at-home care for older adults, with comparative insights across countries. The seminars are conducted in English.

Seminar 2: The Cottage Hospital Model – background, content, and its relation to “Hospital at Home”.

The cottage hospital model was developed for sparsely populated areas in Lapland and combines primary care, inpatient care, and emergency services within a single local unit. Cottage hospitals provide inpatient beds, radiology services, and round-the-clock staffing, and often serve as a closer alternative to hospital care for less complex conditions.

The model is particularly used for older adults and patients with multiple chronic conditions, offering safe and continuous care close to home. The research includes interviews with physicians in both Sweden and New Zealand, where similar rural care models are compared to better understand their role and function in different healthcare systems. Structurally, cottage hospitals resemble key principles of “Hospital at Home” by reducing the need for hospital admissions and providing care close to patients’ everyday lives.
