Swedish National IPY V Scoping Workshop
Welcome to participate in a workshop to identify future research needs, collaborations and areas for the International Polar Year IPY V 2032–2033 together with researchers from Mid Sweden University and other universities.
On 29 September, the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat will arrange a national workshop for the fifth International Year of the Polar Region, IPY V 2032–2033.

The workshop is being held simultaneously at several Swedish higher education institutions, and Mid Sweden University is participating with a local hub on Campus Östersund. The aim is to gather researchers and other relevant actors to identify future research needs, collaborations and areas where Sweden can make special contributions to IPY V.
The workshop is interdisciplinary and aimed at researchers, research infrastructures, knowledge carriers and other actors with an interest in the polar regions and polar-related research and innovation. Research on subarctic and northern environments is also relevant.
Mid Sweden University has several strengths that can contribute to planning, including climate and ecosystem research, biodiversity, sustainable tourism, Sami research and polar law, as well as GIS, modelling, sensor technology and AI. The combination of natural, technical and social science perspectives is particularly valuable in a workshop that will identify future research questions and collaborations.
By participating, researchers at Mid Sweden University get the opportunity to:
- Contribute to and influence the Swedish research direction prior to IPY V
- Make Mid Sweden University's expertise visible
- Make contacts with researchers at other Swedish higher education institutions
- Find potential partners for future consortia and joint research applications
- Strengthen the links between MIUN's own research environments.
The participants are expected to contribute to the discussions about what knowledge advances should be possible by 2032–2033, what methods, infrastructures and collaborations are needed, and in which areas Sweden can make special contributions.
