Planned maintenance: Windows FortiClient VPN

What is affected?

FortiClient VPN on all staff laptops running Windows.

Impact on you

Over the coming days, FortiClient VPN will be automatically updated on your laptop. This update will require a system restart. You will have 72 hours to restart your computer at a time that suits you. If no action is taken within 72 hours, the system will automatically restart.

If you are unable to restart your laptop within the given timeframe (for example, due to ongoing calculations or critical processes), please contact IT Support so we can assist you.

First-time use after update

When launching FortiClient VPN for the first time after the update, you will need to acknowledge that it is a free version of the software. To do this:

  • Double-click the blue shield icon with a white checkmark in the taskbar or select “Open FortiClient Console” from the menu.
  • Accept the displayed message. After this step, you can use the VPN as usual.
  • You log in with your short username. Example: abcd1234@miun.se

Why is this change happening?

Previously, FortiClient included multiple features, such as antivirus protection, which has now been moved to Microsoft Defender. Going forward, FortiClient will only provide VPN functionality. This change requires a different licensing model and  software, which is why a free version of FortiClient will be installed.
