Planned change for Windows computers: Adjustment of "Metered Connection" settings
When "Metered Connection" is enabled, certain background services may be restricted or fail to function as intended.
Examples of features and services that may be affected include:
File synchronization in OneDrive and Teams
Application installations and updates
Security updates
Other system services requiring network communication
To ensure these services function correctly, the "Metered Connection" setting will be disabled for:
The Eduroam Wi-Fi network
Wired network connections
In the vast majority of cases, this setting is already disabled. However, when enabled, it can cause hard-to-diagnose functional issues, missed updates, and—ultimately—security risks.
In isolated cases, disabling this feature may result in increased data usage—for example, if a computer is connected to the internet via:
A network cable connected to a mobile router
However, the assessed benefit of ensuring the proper functioning of organizational computers outweighs the risk of increased data usage in these exceptional cases.
