Overtime and additional time
Work that is carried out on time in addition to the regular daily working hours is counted as additional time or as overtime work and must be ordered by the head of department/manager.
Additional time
For part-time workers, hours worked in addition to regular daily working hours are counted as additional time up to the full-time working hours measure. However, additional work may not be extended to time that goes beyond the regular working hours measure for full-time workers. Then that time is counted as overtime.
Compensation for additional work has the same calculation as simple overtime, see below (applies from 2026-01-01).
During a calendar year, the additional time taken may not exceed 200 hours. Nor may a total of additional time and overtime amount to a maximum of 200 hours.
The employer may not request additional work from a person who is on partial sick leave, partial leave under the law or on leave to care for a child.
An employee on partial retirement leave may request additional work for a maximum of 25 hours per calendar year.
All additional work must be ordered by the head of department/manager.
Overtime for T/A staff
Overtime work means:
- for full-time employees, work that is carried out on time in addition to the regular daily working hours;
- For part-time workers, work that is performed both on time in addition to the regular daily working hours of full-time workers and on time in addition to additional time.
Compensation for overtime work is given in the form of money (overtime supplement) or as leave (compensatory leave). Compensatory leave must be granted provided that the employee wishes it and that the employer assesses that it is possible with regard to the requirements of the business.
All overtime must be boarded by the head of department/manager.
Hourly overtime allowances are calculated as follows:
Simple overtime = monthly salary/94
- Simple overtime refers to overtime work at a time other than that which is qualified overtime as described below.
Qualified overtime = monthly salary/72
- Qualified overtime means overtime that is completed:
- between 19.00 on Friday and 07.00 on Monday
- between 19.00 on the day before Christmas Epiphany, 1st of May or Ascension Day and 07.00 on the following weekday
- between 19.00 the day before Good Friday and 07.00 the day after Easter Monday
- between 19.00 on the day before Pentecost, Midsummer's Eve, Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve and at 07.00 on weekday immediately after the public holiday
- otherwise between 22.00 and 06.00
Hourly compensatory leave is calculated as follows:
Single overtime = number of hours worked x 1.5
Qualified overtime = number of hours worked x 2
If the employer considers that there are special reasons, the employer may order an employee to work overtime for a maximum of 48 hours in a four-week period or 50 hours in a calendar month, but not more than 150 hours in a calendar year.
All overtime must be reported in Primula with the day, time, task and attached decision documentation from the head of department/manager.
Overtime for teachers
All of a teacher's duties must be accommodated within the annual working hours. Overtime in excess of the total annual working hours should normally not occur.
Should special needs arise during the financial year in addition to the annual working hours, a replanning of the annual working hours should primarily be carried out. If rescheduling is not possible, the head of department can order overtime, a maximum of 150 hours per year. If there are special reasons, more than 150 hours may occur. For this, it is required that the head of department receives a special advance notice from the principal and that the employee organisation is informed before a decision is made.
Hourly overtime allowances are calculated as follows:
monthly salary/94
Hourly compensatory leave is calculated as follows:
Number of hours worked x 1.5
All overtime must be reported in Primula with the day, time, task and attached decision documentation from the head of department/manager. The reporting in Primula takes place in connection with the overtime having arisen and should no longer be included in the planning of annual working hours.
