Personal identity number and coordination number
Population Registration
The right to be registered in the population register applies when the residence permit exceeds one year. Every person who is registered in the population register in Sweden receives a personal identity number. Population registration must be done with the Swedish Tax Agency through a personal visit as soon as possible after moving to Sweden. At the visit, passports and decisions on residence permits must be brought with them.
Coordination number
If the person will be residing in Sweden for less than one year and is required to pay taxes, they will instead receive a so-called coordination number (samordningsnummer).
By logging in to the Swedish Tax Agency’s e-service using the Freja app, the employee can apply for a coordination number themselves, Apply for coordination number (Ansök om samordningsnummer). It is also possible to print out a form SKV 7540 and send it to the Swedish Tax Agency.
The employee must also book an appointment for an identity check at a service office. Identity checks are only carried out at selected service offices. Appointments are booked via the Swedish Government Service Center’s booking page: Book an appointment (nemoq.se)
