How do we welcome new students at the start of the semester?

Fri 27 Jun 2025 17:09

At the start of the semester, many of us have an important part in the reception of our new students who will soon be streaming into our physical and digital campuses. On this page you can read about activities, information and support that take place centrally.

Feel free to tell new students!

Welcome letter

The most important thing the student needs to be able to start their studies is in the welcome letter. There must be a date for the start of the course, a link to the schedule, lecture hall or zoom link and more.
It is you as the course or programme coordinator who is responsible for publishing specific information about the course or programme.

The Communications Office (KOM) has system responsibility and is responsible for the overall information in the letters and reminders to teachers.

Remember to log in to the Staff Portal if you are going to edit or publish welcome letters.

Digital introduction week – A Sneak Start

The digital introduction week with student support and the student unions are in their fourth year and have a very good attendance. From last year, KOM arranges it the week before the start of the semester. This is because the start week of the semester is usually very hectic. We call it a Sneak Start. This year, we have added three new information sessions: one with student ambassadors, and  about the learning platform Canvas and one about special support for students with disabilities

25–29 August at 1200–12:30 and 13:00–13:30 via Zoom

Introducing International Students

Arranged by the International Relations Office on 28–29 August at campuses in Östersund and in Sundsvall. During the introduction, the new students receive information about Sweden and the Swedish study system as well as about the various support functions available to students at Mid Sweden University, such as the Library, the Student Health Service and the Student Union. Both incoming exchange students and international students who are studying one of Mid Sweden University's international programs at bachelor's or advanced level are invited to the introduction, which complements the digital introductory sessions and the Welcome Day, which is arranged for all new students.

The ice cream truck on campus

On the start of the semester, KOM has booked the ice cream truck for a visit to our campuses to welcome all new and existing students on board with an ice cream boat. The ice cream truck will be on site on September 1 between 12–13 outside building N in Sundsvall and outside building G in Östersund.

In the morning, staff from KOM and student ambassadors will also be on campus and  refer new students to the right lecture halls.

Welcome days on campus

For the third year, Mid Sweden University and the Central Sweden Chamber of Commerce are holding welcome days within the framework of the Competence Compass project .
The day is arranged for both new and existing students. They get to meet representatives from our student support, local and regional employers, municipalities and associations.  Anyone who can give students ideas on what they can do in their spare time and tips on help in their studies.

  • 2 September at 11–13 in Östersund, the light hall
  • 4 September at 11–13 in Sundsvall, Åkroken (houses N, M, O)
  • Feel free to encourage your students to participate before or after their lectures!
  • To information about the welcome days

The website for new students

The page to which we refer new students has been redesigned and simplified since last year. This is so that the students can more easily find checklists and other things they need during their first time with us. It is also divided into campus and distance students.

Service Center & IT Support

The service center is usually the first person students come into contact with, on campus or via email and phone. During the period Thursday 28 August–Wednesday 3 September at 10–14, IT support will have extra staffing in the Service Center to be able to help with MiunID, Eduroam and other IT-related matters. This is to relieve the Waiters.

Information email

At admission notices 1 and 2 and two weeks before the start of the semester, KOM sends out information emails to all students with, among other things, links to checklists, welcome letters, welcome days and the digital introduction week. New for this year is that there is a newly recorded film with our students who give their best tips to new students. Watch the film on YouTube

Kick-off weeks with the Student Union

In addition to our own activities centrally and introductory days for individual programs at each department, kick-off weeks are arranged by the Student Unions in Sundsvall and Östersund.
