New course provides new perspectives on Sámi literature
Mid Sweden University is now broadening the range of South Sami with a new course on Sami literature. The course provides an introduction to Sami literature from the 1600s to today's acclaimed literary development.
The range of South Sami subjects at Mid Sweden University is now being expanded with the freestanding course "From Simma to Nedrejord: Introductory Course in Sami Literature", 7.5 credits, which is given in Swedish at quarter speed during the spring semester of 2027.
The course deals with different authorships and text genres that have characterized the history of Sámi and European literature. The students will also take part in models of analysis to understand and discuss Sámi literature as indigenous literature and its significance for decolonization and language revitalization.
The course is aimed at anyone who is interested in literature and Sami culture – for example, students, teachers, librarians, readers and writers.
"Sámi literature often falls through the cracks. This course provides a systematic approach to literature and its lines of tradition and development as part of Nordic literary history," says Dorothée Goetze, senior lecturer and study consultant in Southern Sámi at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, HSV, at Mid Sweden University.
