Test AI features in Canvas – register your course for the pilot

Are you a teacher interested in trying out different AI features in your teaching? This autumn, Mid Sweden University is running a pilot of several AI features built into Canvas. The pilot is open to teachers with ongoing courses and will run until 1 December.

Once you have registered yourself and your course and attended an information session, a number of AI features will be made available in your course room. You then decide which of these features you want to activate and use in the course.

If you are not taking part in the pilot, the AI features will also be available in Sandbox courses for your own testing.

What can you try?

The pilot includes several AI features that can support you in teaching and course work, for example features that can:

  • create rubrics and questions for quizzes and other assignments
  • provide support for assessment and feedback
  • summarise and analyse discussions
  • translate content and messages
  • search and summarise content
  • provide agent-based support for certain tasks

Some of the features can also be used by students when they are activated in the course, for example translation support. Which features are used in the course depends on what you, as the teacher, choose to activate and make available.

The AI features are built into Canvas and run in the same Canvas environment as the other features. They operate within the user’s existing permissions and therefore do not give you access to more information than you already have access to in Canvas. Using the AI features also does not mean that data is transferred to another environment.

You are always responsible for assessments, decisions and how AI-generated material is used in your teaching. The AI features are intended to be used as support.

How to register

Email pukontakt@miun.se and state which course or courses you would like to include in the pilot. To take part, you also need to attend a mandatory information session of approximately 30 minutes. The date of the information session will be provided after registration.

Once you have attended the information session, your course will be given access to the AI features included in the pilot.

During the session, you will receive a brief introduction to the features and what is important to consider when using them in teaching. You will also receive information about how the features relate to your existing permissions in Canvas, what you can do with them, and how personal data is handled.

Why are we running the pilot?

The purpose is to gain experience of how the AI features work in practice and what benefits they may provide in teaching and course work, as well as to provide a basis for decisions about which AI features should be available in Canvas in the future.

We are particularly interested in identifying which features are useful for teachers and students and how they should be used. As a participant, you will therefore also have the opportunity to provide feedback and share your experiences from the pilot.
