Printing operations are gathered in Sundsvall
Mid Sweden University gathers its printing operations in Sundsvall. The decision is a step towards using resources more efficiently and creating a more cohesive operation, while at the same time changing the conditions for pressure over time.
Why are we making the change?
Printing operations are currently conducted on both campuses, with partly overlapping functions. At the same time, needs change over time, where printed material is to some extent replaced by digital solutions. In connection with the expiration of the contracts for the printing equipment in Östersund, the issue has been brought to the fore, which creates a natural opportunity to review how the business is organized going forward.
An investigation has been carried out to analyse various alternatives: to maintain the current structure, to consolidate to one location or to close down the printing business completely. The investigation shows, among other things, that there are double costs in the current arrangement, that resources can be used more efficiently by consolidating operations and that a complete liquidation would entail greater risks, including reduced flexibility and longer lead times. Against this background, a decision has been made to consolidate the operations to Sundsvall as a first step.
What does the decision mean?
The decision means that the printing operations in Östersund will be gradually phased out, that all internal printing production will be gathered in Sundsvall and that the change will be implemented in the autumn of 2026. The consolidation aims to create a more cohesive operation, clearer working methods and better conditions for planning and quality assurance.
What happens now?
Property Manager Lennart Johansson has been tasked with leading the implementation. The work includes developing a project plan, conducting a business analysis and ensuring collaboration, negotiation and risk assessment. The project plan must be ready by 31 May and the business analysis no later than 31 August.
What does this mean for you as a client?
During a transitional period, it will be possible to print in both locations. After that, all production will take place in Sundsvall. This means some changes in how orders are made in the future, but also a more uniform way of working. For example:
- New routines and contact channels
- Need for increased foresight when ordering
- transport of printed material between the towns
More concrete information about how orders will be made in the future will come before the change is fully implemented.
Timetable in brief
- Week 32: Adaptations in Sundsvall begin
- Week 34: last week for large format printing in Östersund
- Autumn 2026: consolidation will be implemented
What happens in the longer term?
Consolidation is a first step. Once the new structure has been established, the University will re-evaluate how the printing operations should be organised in the future, including the possibility of using external suppliers.
