How can sound be studied scientifically and used as artistic expression? On 15 October, ChallengeEU and the University of Warmia and Mazury invite students and staff at Mid Sweden University to join Art & Science Day online and explore the connections between art, science and sound.

Art & Science Day is an open event dedicated to bringing together two worlds that are often seen as separate. Through lectures, exhibitions, and discussions, the event highlights how art and science share common ground: both help us explore reality, ask questions, experiment, and discover new ways of understanding the world.

This year's theme is sound: a phenomenon that can be measured, analysed, experienced, interpreted, and used creatively at the same time. Throughout the day, researchers and artists will present different perspectives on sound, demonstrating how scientific and artistic approaches can complement one another.

The open lectures will be livestreamed and are accessible to anyone interested in exploring the intersection of art and science.

The Physics of Sound

Dr Sławomir Kulesza, Professor vid UWM

Discover the physical nature of sound as a propagating longitudinal mechanical wave. Through demonstrations and experimentations, participants will be encouraged to explore the phenomenon of sound for themselves.

When Sound Becomes Art

Dr Marcin Piotrowicz

A presentation of artistic practice at the intersection of art and science, where sound – understood as vibration and wave – become visual and sculptural forms of expression.

Soundscape and Our Environment

Dr Agnieszka Jaszczak, professor vid UWM

A reflection on how soundscapes are an integral part of our surroundings, shaping the way we perceive, experience and interact with the spaces around us.
