Local storage
Local storage means that information is stored on physical storage devices, such as internal hard drives in computers, external hard drives or USB flash drives. Local storage shall only be used when there is a clear need and when approved central storage solutions or cloud services are not suitable.
Information that is subject to confidentiality, contains personal data or is mission critical should not be stored locally, but in the University's approved storage areas.
External storage devices
External storage devices are removable devices that connect to a computer when necessary. They provide the ability to easily transport and store data, but are also more vulnerable to damage, loss or theft compared to central storage.
Responsibilities of the User
The user is responsible for information stored locally or on external storage devices. This includes responsibility for:
- protect the device from unauthorised access;
- ensure that the information is not disseminated to unauthorised persons;
- immediately report any loss or suspected incident in accordance with applicable procedures.
The organization is not responsible for loss of data stored locally outside approved storage solutions.
Backup
It is the user's responsibility to back up information stored locally. Data necessary for the operation shall be backed up regularly and stored separately from the original.
