Ellinor represented Mid Sweden University at an international crisis management workshop in Canada
When risk and crisis management student Ellinor Haglöf had the opportunity to participate as at an international workshop in Toronto, she jumped at the chance. During two intensive days, researchers and students from several countries met to discuss crisis management and collaboration.
Ellinor Haglöf, who is studying the fifth semester of the Risk and Crisis Management Programme in Östersund, participated in an international workshop at York University in Toronto at the end of September. The workshop was arranged within the framework of the international project "Collaboration for advancing Crisis management research and education in the Arctic (CCArctic)", where the Risk and Crisis Research Centre (RCR) at Mid Sweden University is one of several partners.
"The workshop was very much about crisis management and collaboration. Each participating department presented its experiences, which provided both breadth and depth in the discussions," says Ellinor.
Meeting across national borders
The participants came from Sweden, Canada, Norway and Finland, and the meeting provided a unique arena where students and researchers could meet across national borders. Ellinor had the opportunity to go because RCR was looking for a student representative from year three. The students had to apply in writing and justify how the participation could enrich both their education and future professional role, as well as in what way they could contribute to the project.
She will take the experiences from the two days with her into her continued education – and future career.
"I take with me that regardless of the degree of education, we students always have something to contribute. There are great opportunities to make a difference in risk and crisis management. I also learned what international cooperation can actually look like in practice, which is very valuable for my future professional life.
Ellinor describes the Risk and Crisis Management Programme as a programme with a broad and clear sociological perspective, where issues of risk and crisis are studied at the individual, group and societal level. It is precisely this variation that makes the education applicable in several areas.
In the future, she dreams of working with security and defence issues at a government agency, and the vision is to eventually work internationally.
Also on the trip was Olof Hemmingsson, researcher at RCR.
