Residence permit for higher education

In general, students from a non-European Union (EU) or non-European Economic Area (EEA) country need to apply for a residence permit for higher education in order to study in Sweden for longer than 3 months. The permit must be issued before you travel to Sweden.

British citizens who want to study in Sweden after 1 January 2021 have to apply for a residence permit.

British citizens who lived in Sweden with a right of residence until 31st December 2020 and who want to stay must apply for a residence status.

Requirements for a residence permit for higher education

For a residence permit you must:

  • have a valid passport
  • be admitted to full-time studies at Mid Sweden University in a course or programme that requires your presence in Sweden
  • be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit
  • have paid the tuition fee
  • have, or have applied for a comprehensive health insurance policy

Your Notification of Selection Results from universityadmissions.se is your proof of admission. No separate admission letter will be issued by Mid Sweden University.  

How should I apply?

You have to apply for your residence permit directly with the Swedish Migration Agency. The best way is to apply online. In order to receive your residence permit in time for the start of your studies, it is important that you submit your application as soon as possible after you have been admitted and paid the tuition fee.

Supporting documents for fee-paying students

If you are a fee paying student, Mid Sweden University will notify the Swedish Migration Agency when the tuition fee has been paid. Students do not need to send in a receipt of payment to the Swedish Migration Board. 

Proof of health insurance

All tuition fee-paying students at Mid Sweden University are covered by comprehensive insurance called FAS+ issued by Kammarkollegiet. You will receive your insurance certificate after the tuition fee has been paid.

Extend residence permit for higher education

When do I need to apply for an extension of my residence permit?

If you currently have a residence permit for higher education and will continue studying after your permit expires, you must apply for an extension before your current permit expires, but no earlier than six months before your current permit expires.

Requirements for a residence permit extension

For a permit extension, you must

  • have a valid passport
  • be admitted to full-time studies at Mid Sweden University in a course or programme that requires your presence in Sweden
  • have made acceptable progress in your studies
  • be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit
  • have, or have applied for a comprehensive health insurance policy

What does full-time studies mean?

Full-time studies (100% study pace) in Sweden equals 30 credits for one semester. This means that you have to be admitted to 30 credits if you apply for a residence permit for one semester. One week of full-time study (40 hours) corresponds to 1,5 credits and each semester consists of 20 weeks.

Delayed studies

If your studies have taken longer than expected and you need to apply for a residence permit outside the ordinary study period, you must also submit a certificate from your supervisor or program coordinator.

Can I look for a job in Sweden after my studies?

If you have a residence permit for studies in higher education in Sweden and have completed your studies you can get a residence permit to seek employment or explore the possibilities of starting your own business here.

What are the requirements for such a permit?

To obtain a residence permit after you have completed your studies:

  • You must submit your application before your current permit expires
  • You must have a passport that is valid throughout your stay in Sweden
  • You must have competed your degree program at Mid Sweden University and passed all of your courses
  • Your last residence permit must have been a residence permit for higher education in Sweden
  • You must be planning to seek employment or explore the possibilities of starting your own business
  • You must be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit
  • You must have, or have applied for, a comprehensive healthcare insurance policy that is valid for healthcare in Sweden. (That insurance is not provided by the university)
