Residence permit for higher education

In general, students from a non-European Union (EU) or non-European Economic Area (EEA) country need to apply for a residence permit for higher education in order to study in Sweden for longer than 3 months. The permit must be issued before you travel to Sweden.

Degree Seeking Students

You must ensure you have all the required documentation for your residence permit application ready so you can submit it on the same day that you reciveve your confirmation of tuition fee payment and insurance certificate from Mid Sweden University. 


For a residence permit you must: 

  • have a valid passport 
  • be admitted to full-time studies at Mid Sweden University in a course or programme that requires your presence in Sweden 
  • documentation to prove that you are be able to support yourself financially during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit 
  • have paid the tuition fee (the university will inform the Migration Agency of successful payment)
  • have, or have applied for a comprehensive health insurance policy (All tuition fee-paying students are covered by comprehensive insurance called FAS+ issued by Kammarkollegiet.) 

All applicants must present their passport in person at a Swedish Embassy abroad, if they are applying for a first-time residence permit. Advice for a successful residence permit application: Read all the details regarding the process and required documentation before you have received your admission results! Some documents take a long time to prepare (such as financing arrangements and passport renewal) and can delay your application if you have not prepared them in time.

Exchange Students

You should ensure to have all the required documentation for your residence permit application ready so you can submit it on the same day that you reciveve your notification of selection results and insurance certificate from Mid Sweden University. 


For a residence permit you must: 

  • have a valid passport 
  • be admitted to 30 credits at Mid Sweden University. All courses must be campus based and require your presence in Sweden 
  • documentation to prove that you are be able to support yourself financially during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit 
  • have, or have applied for a comprehensive health insurance policy (All exchange students are covered by comprehensive insurance called StudentIN issued by Kammarkollegiet.)

Extend residence permit for higher education

When do I need to apply for an extension of my residence permit?

If you currently have a residence permit for higher education and will continue studying after your permit expires, you must apply for an extension before your current permit expires, but no earlier than six months before your current permit expires.

Requirements for a residence permit extension

For a permit extension, you must

  • have a valid passport
  • be admitted to full-time studies at Mid Sweden University in a course or programme that requires your presence in Sweden
  • have made acceptable progress in your studies
  • be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit
  • have, or have applied for a comprehensive health insurance policy

What does full-time studies mean?

Full-time studies (100% study pace) in Sweden equals 30 credits for one semester. This means that you have to be admitted to 30 credits if you apply for a residence permit for one semester. One week of full-time study (40 hours) corresponds to 1,5 credits and each semester consists of 20 weeks.

How should I apply?

You have to apply for your residence permit extension directly with the Swedish Migration Agency. The best way is to apply online.

Delayed studies

If your studies have taken longer than expected and you need to apply for a residence permit outside the ordinary study period, you must also submit a certificate from your supervisor or program coordinator.

Can I look for a job in Sweden after my studies?

If you have a residence permit for studies in higher education in Sweden and have completed your studies you can get a residence permit to seek employment or explore the possibilities of starting your own business here.

What are the requirements for such a permit?

To obtain a residence permit after you have completed your studies:

  • You must submit your application before your current permit expires
  • You must have a passport that is valid throughout your stay in Sweden
  • You must have competed your degree program at Mid Sweden University and passed all of your courses
  • Your last residence permit must have been a residence permit for higher education in Sweden
  • You must be planning to seek employment or explore the possibilities of starting your own business
  • You must be able to support yourself during the time for which you are applying for a residence permit
  • You must have, or have applied for, a comprehensive healthcare insurance policy that is valid for healthcare in Sweden. (That insurance is not provided by the university)
