Welcome to Sweden: the first step in the Swedish language and society
The course is an introduction to living and working in Swedish society, with a special focus on everyday language, the basics of Swedish history and culture, and basic knowledge of the Swedish public system.
Participants
The course is designed for employees who are beginners in Swedish and who intend to stay at a Swedish workplace for a longer period of time. For example, employees who have recently arrived in the Swedish labour market or who have not yet had time to establish themselves in Swedish society in terms of language, culture and society.
Eligibility
The course is a contract education that can be arranged for a fee by a legal entity, such as public clients or private companies, for the skills development of employees. The organisation that orders the contract education (the client) decides who can participate. However, contract education follows the same requirements and maintains the same quality as other higher education programmes.
Content
The course is a collaboration between three disciplines: Swedish, History and Political Science.
- In Swedish, the focus is on communication in everyday situations, but we also talk about culture and language, holidays and more
- In history, we go through the basics of the region's (Västernorrland/Jämtland) and Sweden's historical and cultural development
- In political science, we discuss how Swedish society works with a focus on everyday situations. For example, how authorities, health care, schools and social care work, but also democratic rights and obligations such as the right to vote in municipal elections
Structure and approach
The course consists of three modules, one in each discipline. They can be combined in different ways depending on the wishes and needs of the organisation, but the suggestion is to start with Swedish, then History and finally Political Science.
Teaching is given at least 4 hours per week, and the course duration is at least three months (one month per module). Total course time and study pace can be adapted upon request.
Teaching methods
Based on the needs and wishes of the organisation, we can conduct the course on-site or remotely or a combination of both.
The course requires access to a computer and a good internet connection. In cases where the course is to be given remotely, access to a webcam and headset (or similar) is also required. Remote teaching takes place via our learning platform, Canvas, and the remote tool, Zoom. The teaching has a flexible structure and consists of, among other things, lectures, seminars and various examination assignments.
As a course participant, you are responsible for your learning and are expected to work independently with assignments between the course meetings.
Examination
To pass the course, attendance at all mandatory sessions and approved written assignments is required. The grading scale consists of the grades Pass or Fail. The course does not provide higher education credits; after passing the course, a certificate is issued.
Joint reading
Joint reading with participants from other organisations may occur.

Sofie Blombäck (Political Science), Helena Andersson (Swedish), Dorothée Goetze (History)
