Social studies gives you broad knowledge of society. You will get tools to be able to describe, understand and explain the often complex and multifaceted society we live in.
Social studies as a subject has a long tradition, with an origin that can be found in the 1918/1919 school reform. Since its inception, the subject's task has been defined, albeit with different formulations, to focus on the values on which society rests. The subject of civics at Mid Sweden University focuses on subject and general didactics, general social theory, perspectives on democracy and the varying dimensions of citizenship (Citizenship Education).
The didactic studies deal with the emergence and function of social studies and various subject-specific didactic issues (planning, implementing and assessing). General social theory deals with areas such as the challenges of the welfare state, globalization processes and power. Issues of democracy and citizenship are thus reflected in an interdisciplinary way, with both national and international starting points.
