Researcher position in Engineering Physics

Department of Engineering, Mathematics and Science Education

We conduct research and education in physics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics, industrial design engineering and didactics in mathematics and science education. We offer unique and world-leading research within the FSCN Research Centre and Sports Tech Research Centre.

Job description
The main research objective is to advance the fabrication of aluminum current collectors for cathodes in lithium-ion batteries. The project will be carried out at Mid Sweden University in close collaboration with three Swedish industry partners and Chalmers University of Technology. The main tasks include the development of slurry coatings on aluminum foil, fabrication of coated aluminum current collectors, electrochemical evaluation of the fabricated current collectors in Li-ion battery cells, and comprehensive materials characterization of the coated aluminum foils. Characterization techniques may include, for example, SEM, AFM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, contact-angle measurements, adhesion testing, and other relevant surface and materials characterization methods.

The researcher is expected to perform high-quality research as part of a multidisciplinary team, contribute to the development of slurry-based coating processes, analyze and interpret experimental results, and collaborate closely with academic and industrial partners. The results are expected to be disseminated through publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences. The position may also involve supervising students conducting degree projects and contributing to the development of future research collaborations and funding applications.

Your background
To be eligible for employment as a researcher, your qualifications must match the requirements described in Mid Sweden University’s employment procedures.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree in Engineering physics, Chemical engineering, Chemistry, Materials science, Materials engineering, or a closely related field, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree.

To be considered for this position, you must have:

  • Knowledge of electrode fabrication, battery assembly, and electrochemical characterization techniques, such as galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), etc.
  • Experience in materials characterization techniques such as SEM, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and surface characterization, as well as the ability to interpret and analyze experimental data.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary research teams, contribute to high-quality scientific publications, and present research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

The following will be considered merits:

  • Experience in electrochemical testing and evaluation of lithium-ion batteries.
  • Experience in materials processing and surface engineering, including slurry preparation, coating techniques, and optimization of coating parameters.
  • Experience in evaluating coating properties, including adhesion, electrical conductivity, surface wettability, and interfacial stability.
  • Experience in collaborating with industrial partners and participating in collaborative research and development projects.

Personal qualities
The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant’s ability to conduct independent research, demonstrated through scientific skills and the quality of their research contributions. Greater importance will be attached to the quality of individual scientific work than to the number of publications.Consideration will also be given to collaborative skills, drive, and problem-solving abilities, as well as how the applicant’s experience and expertise complement and strengthen ongoing research at the department and contribute to its future development.
