The theme of the 31st Nordic Symposium on Tourism and Hospitality Research is Rethinking Tourism for a Sustainable Future. Accordingly, the aim of the Symposium is to share, critically discuss and advance science-based ideas and approaches that show the capacity to transform contemporary crises into opportunities. The quest of conceptualizing and practicing alternative forms of sustainable tourism has never been greater.
In line with this goal of the Symposium, the focus of the intensive Nordic Doctoral School 2023 is to share and debate this still little advanced research vein aiming at exploring tourism’s potentials to transform untenable realities within the socio-economic and ecological spheres towards more sustainable future paths, especially in the Nordic context.
The Nordic Doctoral School 2023 is scheduled 18th Sep (full day) – 19th Sep (half day). The aim of this intensive PhD short course is to critically elaborate on those parts of your thesis work which show potentials to positively transform our society and/or our ecological environment. The Nordic Doctoral School is thematically open to all topics of ongoing PhD theses in the broad tourism and hospitality domain and related disciplines. However, the focus of the 2023 course is on tourism-related phenomena, theoretical and methodological aspects in your thesis that contribute to a responsible and sustainable world creation. Thus, the aim of the PhD course is to critically reflect on your thesis from an ontological, epistemological and/or ethical perspective.
The Nordic Doctoral School 2023 does not require any fees, i.e., students have only to cover travel and accommodation costs. Enrolled students will be guided through the PhD course by senior researchers. An introductory lecture by Prof. Matthias Fuchs will provide additional input to the course topic. Registered students will be recommended a list of pre-readings. The PhD course consists of parallel sessions where PhD students will present and critically discuss the topic related to the course theme and the thesis topic. Students meet the entry requirements for the course if they have been admitted to a third cycle, i.e., PhD study program. Active participation at the Nordic Doctoral School equals 3 ECTS points. Successful course attendance will be approved by a course certificate.
The course language is English.
We are looking forward seeing you in Östersund, Sweden, in September 2023.
