When the IEEE association announced the Fellows for 2022, we proudly found Guest professor Gerhard Hancke Jr in the list of elevated researchers. He´s been chosen for his contributions to secure and resilient wireless technology for the Industrial Internet-of-Things.

IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation.

How does it feel to be elevated as an IEEE fellow?

I am honored and I am grateful to all collaborators and students I have had the opportunity to work with as they have all contributed to this recognition, says Prof. Hancke Jr.

What are you working on right now?

My focus is making connectivity within the Internet-of-Things (IoT) more resilient to difficult operating conditions. We are working on increasing the accuracy of time-of-flight ranging and device localization in environments with high amount of obstruction and reflection. We are also investigating whether we can make some security protocols function even if communication is disrupted, and how we can reliably distribute and manage cryptographic keys for in large IoT systems, Prof. Hancke Jr. sums up.
