Business and economics students Manne Mettälä, Sebastian Nilsson and Annaida Edvardsson are in their third week of internship at SEB's office in Sundsvall. Much is new and exciting and together the group will work on a case linked to the right to move that exists within the Swedish pension system.

Following the deregulation of the market three years ago, transfer rights allow pension savers to move their pension capital to another provider or switch insurance types if they wish.

“This is something we’re very interested in at the bank and something we think a lot about. What do the transfer patterns look like, who are the players in the market, and how do they affect the individual pension saver’s financial situation?” says Magnus Modin, Head of Individual Service & Support at SEB in Sundsvall. He adds that it’s very valuable to get the students’ perspective on this.

“The case study is intended to provide new insights and perspectives. Of course, we hope to gain a better understanding of how we can succeed in the transfer market, improve our customer service in this area, and enhance the communication we use with this customer group.”

Manne, Sebastian, and Annaida all requested internships in the finance sector and feel that the structure of the assignment is both useful and educational.

“It’s especially exciting to step away from theoretical studies for a while and try out the profession for real,” says Manne, with Sebastian adding:
“Applying what we’ve learned in school to a real case adds something extra—it makes it much easier to see the value of what we’ve studied.”

Accepting interns is a given, says Magnus, explaining that it is both about showcasing the various professional roles the banking sector can offer and about helping to ensure a long-term supply of skilled professionals.

“I can definitely see myself working in the financial sector,” says Annaida, who has long been curious about the industry.
“The variety of tasks is broad, and there seem to be many paths to specialize in once you’ve completed your education, which is very appealing to me.”
