Research study in simulated nature environment
In this study we collaborated with ETOUR researchers studying how tourism operators can lower carbon footprint. The lab was turned into Järvzoo animal park through video, sound, and scent and 90 participants visited the animal park ‘virtually’.
In October 2022, experiments were carried out in RCR Simulation Lab as part of a project investigating climate-conscious decision making in tourism destinations.
When research participants entered the simulation room doorway, they ended up in the reception of the Järvzoo animal park. There they were met by a researcher welcoming them to the park with instructions and information. In the experiment participants were transported between different animal enclosures with moose, wolves, reindeer, and musk ox. Information signs along the way conveyed various animal facts and environmental messages.
The aim was to see whether the information presented on signs inside the animal park as well as menus in the zoo restaurant can be manipulated to impact decisions that guests make during their visit, e.g. food choices at lunch. Participants were surveyed before and after the simulation and a follow-up survey will be carried out at a later stage.
