Earlier this year Dr. Mohamed Eldefrawy was granted 148 500 SEK by STINT to initiate a research collaboration between the Mid Sweden University and the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt, to address the foreseen security challenges for the Internet of Things (IoT) networks. Dr. Eldefrawy started this new collaboration by visiting the AUC for one week in May. Together they made a plan for a joint journal paper and research exchange.

September 16-21 it was time for PhD-student Mariam Aboelwafa, Dr. Karim G. Seddik and Dr. Yasser Gadallah from The American University in Cairo to visit Mid Sweden University in Sundsvall.

- We really like Sweden and the people here are very nice and hospitable. It is our first time here and we found it fantastic, says Dr. Seddik.

The first day the researchers got a presentation of the research centre and met all the researchers’ breifly. The next day Dr. Gadallah and Dr. Karim G. Seddik held an open seminar "The Internet of Things: A Practical Top-Down Realization" for the PhD-students and researchers at the STC Research Centre. They presented the research conducted at the AUC communications research group, with the purpose of providing solutions that address the issues of the IoT.  They also discuss issues that related to the physical characteristics of the objects and some related research such as cognitive radio and massive MIMO. The objective of these different components of our research efforts is to ensure that we contribute to a practical and sustainable implementation of the IoT in a way that addresses the issues at the different system layers.

- We both work within the large area of IoT but I think that our two universities can complement each other and benefit a lot from this new research collaboration, says Dr. Gadallah.

During the rest of their visit in Sundsvall the researchers will get to know each other more and start to work with the joint journal paper.

- We also plan to start a joint research project and are looking thru different grant requirements. In the future we hope to start an exchange program where students can make an university exchange for one semester or summer, Dr. Seddik say.

There will surely be more exchanges between the two universities in the future.
