New course strengthens expertise in industrial cybersecurity
On 14–16 April, a new online course in cybersecurity developed by STC and FSCN was held for the first time. The course, which provides in‑depth knowledge of threats, risks, and protection in industrial environments, featured guest lectures from experts – something the participants greatly appreciated.
In the DRIVEN project, which is funded by the Knowledge Foundation, the research centres STC and FSCN are developing new courses adapted to the needs of data-driven development in different industries. The courses have been developed together with 23 companies and organisations, and one of the courses is Industrial Cyber Security, which was held for the first time last week.
– Cyber security is an increasingly important issue for industry, especially given today's world situation and the advancement of various AI technologies. Industrial cyber security also differs from traditional cyber security work, as there is a greater focus on continuous operation and that attacks on industrial systems can have catastrophic effects, says Stefan Forsström, associate professor at STC and project manager for DRIVEN.
During the course, which consists of three intensive afternoon seminars online, the participants discussed and reflected on cyber security problems in various industrial operations with a special focus on forest industry applications.
One of the course participants was Erik Lidström and he was satisfied with both the structure and the content.
– I thought it was a good format with a discussion seminar because you got involved and got to participate more actively in the course. The course also had a good focus on both the broad in cybersecurity and the narrow in the industrial, says Erik.
Insights from Experts
The participants were able to take part in both theoretical perspectives and practical experiences of cyber security through guest lectures with five experienced experts in the field: Pål Göran Stensson from IKEA, Mattias Karp Gidlöf and Sebastian Nyberg from ABB, Donald Davy from Billerud and Ola Pontén from SCA. They shared their insights into today's cyber security threats and how they can be identified, evaluated and prevented – and also what it is like to work as a cyber security expert.
– The unique thing about this course is precisely our close collaboration with guest lecturers who can give their perspectives from the industry and to work with cyber security and industrial threats out in the real world, says Birgitta Engberg, centre director at FSCN.
Claes Johansson, who took the course, also highlighted the guest lectures as a valuable element.
– I especially appreciated the guest lecturers from the industry who shared their experiences from real life. It gave more than what you usually learn in an academic course, says Claes.
