The Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as Shanghai Ranking, recently published the list of the world’s top universities and divisions in sport science in 2021. The Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre at Mid Sweden University was ranked among the 76-100 best in the world and had the highest ranking in Sweden.

“We see this as a proof that the Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre conducts sports research of exceptionally good quality, even though we are a rather small unit. This shows that we have a strong team and that our research environment makes it possible to deliver world-leading research", says Glenn Björklund, Centre Manager at the Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre.

The National Winter Sports Centre has been on the list in previous years and keeps its place on the list, which includes the 300 best of all universities surveyed in the world.

“It is fierce competition because we are compared with all universities that conduct sports science research and publish in international scientific journals. This is really huge”, says Sture Espwall, Head of Department of the Department of Health Sciences.

Academic Ranking of World Universities is an independent organization that ranks universities internationally. It was started by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with the original purpose of benchmarking Chinese universities against international universities. The criteria are scientific publication, research quality and international cooperation. Research quality is the most important criteria with a total of 70 per cent of the total score.
