Mid Sweden Craft Brewing Lab (feasibility study)
The aim of this feasibility study is to investigate the possibilities of establishing the Mid Sweden craft brewing laboratory.
Small-scale breweries in Sweden often have the potential to develop their business activities, but there are many challenges, including low margins, peripheral locations, long transport routes and restrictive legislation.
In this feasibility study, we investigate how a craft brewing lab could support the industry in this area, and to determine what kind of skills would need to be prioritised for business development and advancement of knowledge in this sector in the regions of Västernorrland and Jämtland/Härjedalen.
If the recommendations proposed in the feasibility study are implemented, the initiative will contribute to the development of the rural contexts found in these regions, where small businesses – including small-scale breweries – are of great importance to economic development and employment.
The establishment of a craft brewing laboratory also raises the possibility that courses and training programmes could attract more students and create a more vibrant campus. This is in line with the objective of "prioritising higher education institutions and research institutes as engines for innovation and development" in Västernorrland, as well as efforts towards research and an attractive living environment by "strengthening Mid Sweden University's attractiveness".
