Valuing and Evaluating Creativity for Sustainable Regional Development
The city of Östersund joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) as a city of gastronomy in 2010. The UCCN is designed to share best practices and lessons learned among member cities in using the creative sectors to enhance their sustainable development.
As a member of the network, the city of Östersund was awarded the opportunity to host the 2016 annual meeting of the UCCN. This was a large, international event with over 450 participants from 70 cities worldwide.
Along with the UCCN annual meeting, UNESCO and network members called for a research and evaluation agenda to support knowledge development and sharing across the network. As a result, network members endorsed the idea that MIUN would host the Valuing and Evaluating Creativity For Regional Development conference (VEC), which was the first scientific conference to directly support the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This conference responded to the declaration by the United Nations that 2015 was the international year of evaluation.
This project was funded by Formas, Mid Sweden University, Region Jämtland-Härjedalen and the City of Östersund.
