CoRe ‑ Cognitive load during Reconsolidation of traumatic memories.
Many people who are displaced have experienced traumatic events, something that can lead to the development of trauma-related mental health issues. This project investigates whether an innovative method, adapted for individuals with a refugee background, can reduce trauma related symptoms.
Many individuals who have been forced to flee carry memories of severe and traumatic events from before and during their flight, as well as from challenges encountered in the host country. Symptoms related to recurring, intrusive, and distressing memories are referred to as intrusive symptoms, and they are a hallmark feature of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
CoRe is a brief and innovative intervention developed at Mid Sweden University. The method aims to reduce intrusive symptoms, and it has previously shown effectiveness in decreasing the number of intrusions and overall severity of PTSD among individuals suffering from symptoms related to difficult and traumatic memories.
The purpose of this project is to translate and adapt the method for individuals who have fled from various countries, and to evaluate its effectiveness and usability. The CoRe intervention will be delivered digitally in Arabic, Dari, Farsi, English, and Swedish. Data collection for the project is expected to begin in the autumn of 2025.
